The human eye is a technological miracle. The retina weighs approximately 1 gram, occupies 0.0003 inches and consumes 0.0001 watts. A manmade chip equivalent to what the retina does would be 500,000 times bigger (about 10,000 cubic inches), it would consume 300 watts and need a separate cooling system and would weigh about 100 lbs. A manmade chip would have about 1 million transistors; the human eye has the equivalent of 25 billion transistors.

When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light.– Luke11: 34 NIV

In the Sermon on the Mountain, Jesus spoke about the eyes; He said that the eyes are the lamps of the body. Meaning that through the eyes, the body is able to perceive its environment. He continued to say that if your eyes are “healthy” (the word healthy in this context is simply a medical term), in other words, if you have good eyesight, you are able to accurately assess your surroundings.

But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. – Luke 11:34 NIV

In the second part of Jesus’ statement He uses a play on words when contrasting the healthy eye with the unhealthy eye, (the word “unhealthy” in its original form is not the medical term that contrasts with healthy). The word unhealthy that Jesus used means evil.

This is a simple yet powerful truth, that what we choose to look at will determine the trajectory of our lives. That if we’re looking at healthy things we expose the rest of the body to a healthy trajectory. But, if we choose to fix our eyes on evil things, we’re exposing the rest of our body to an unhealthy trajectory.
