Constant inconsistency

The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, ‘O God, forgive me,’ or ‘Help me.’ – Billy Graham
You may have heard this saying: “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Death and taxes are the only constant things in our lives; things change, and nothing remains the same. One day you are up and the next you are feeling down. One day your circumstances are great and the next day they are bad. Sometimes you feel happy and at other times, you are sad. There are times when you feel strong and other times you feel weak. It would seem like the only thing that is constant in our lives is that, things change.
We live our lives in a constant state of change. Our lives are lived in a series of stages; we start as infants, change into teenagers, we become young single adults, then married adults. We become adults with children, adults with grandchildren… Each one of these stages is temporary. Therefore, we can conclude that these stages are inconsistent stages in our lives. And, as if this were not enough, in all of these stages we are going to encounter inconsistent people and inconsistent circumstances.
There are people for whom the inconsistencies began in their early childhood or in their teenage years when they felt abandoned by one or both parents. For others, the inconsistency happened in adulthood as the result of a failed marriage or friendship. There are times when circumstances will be positive and other times they will be difficult. There are times when you will be happy and other times sad. The truth is, inconsistency can have a devastating effect on us.
At some point in our lives, we will feel the negative effects of inconsistent people and circumstances. The most devastating effect of inconsistency however, happens when we come to the realization, that not only people around us are inconsistent, we are inconsistent too. It is that moment when we realize, that we are not always the people we should be, that we do not consistently say or do the things we should say and do…Not only are the people around us inconsistent, we are inconsistent too.
There is good news! In this inconsistent world, there is ONE THING that remains consistent and that is God’s love for you and me. That despite the fact that our circumstances are inconsistent, although the people around us are inconsistent, even though we ourselves are inconsistent, we can find peace and tranquility in that fact that God’s love for us remains constant no matter how inconsistent we are.
Everything changes. People change, circumstances change, even we change, but in an unstable, ever changing world, God’s love for us will never change.
Romans 8:35-39 NLT
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
