Does your life make a difference? God created you with a divine purpose; He created you so that you could make a difference in the lives of others. Discovering God’s purpose is a sensitive and delicate process. There will be a time to dream, a time to actively wait, and then eventually there will come a time when we must act. Timing is everything. You do not want to act too soon and you do not want to act once it is too late.

How will you know when it is time? Nehemiah traveled from Persia to Jerusalem with his heart set on rebuilding the city walls. After examining the walls, he knew it was time to act. The dreaming and preparation process had concluded and the time to act had come. However, Nehemiah had no idea how the people would respond. The people had no idea who Nehemiah was after all, and worse yet, they had lived in that condition for generations. The people could have easily mocked him or ignored him entirely. A person acting on God’s divine purpose however, is a person on a mission who cannot be silent forever.

Nehemiah 2:17-18 NIV

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.

Eventually, the time will come for you to act on God’s divine purpose. Moreover, like Nehemiah, you will know the time has come when you are able to clearly answer the following questions:

  • What is the problem that needs to be dealt with?
  • What is the solution to the problem?
  • What is the reason why something should be done?
  • What is the reason why something needs to be done right now?
