No doubt that the story on Noah is one of the most told Bible stories of all time. Yet, if you ask ten people to tell you what the story of Noah is about you will probably get ten different answers. Some say it’s the story of Noah and the ark, others says it’s the story of Noah’s faith and obedience while others say it’s the story of God’s anger with the world. In spite of the fact that all of these are components of the story, none of them are the main theme of the story. All we have to do is go to the Bible where the story originates and we immediately discover what the main theme of this story really is.

So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created… …for I regret that I have made them.” But Noah found favor (grace) in the eyes of the Lord. This is the account of Noah and his family…. (Genesis 6:7-9 NIV)

Summing these verses up, the main theme of the story is the grace of God as told through the story of Noah and his family. Why is this detail so important? First, obviously God was greatly upset but his anger was no match for his grace. He could not bring himself to destroy all of humanity. This is great news for me personally because I’m aware that I sin and more often than I really want to admit. Yet God’s anger towards my sin is no match for his grace in my life. Second, his grace was so great that God not only extend it to Noah, but also extended it to Noah’s wife, and to Noah’s three sons and their wives. This is great news for all of us because this same grace that was extended to Noah and his family is also extended to you and me and our families.

Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”

Heavenly Father it is good to know that you do not treat me the way I deserve to be treated, but instead, every day you pour out your grace into my life. Despite my sins, you offer me grace instead of anger, and not just me but to all of my family. Help me to always keep this in mind so that I may be thankful and do the same with others.
