As you work on becoming the person God wants you to become, and while you work on the things that He has called you to do, God is busy working in the background. Unawares to you, God is working to accomplish something that will give greater significance to His divine purpose for your life.
I will attempt to explain what I just said. God chose the people of Israel to be a light to the nations. God did not simply choose them to bless them or because they were better than anyone else was; God chose them as an instrument through which He would bring salvation to the Gentile nations.

Isaiah 29: 6 NLT
I will make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.

While Nehemiah and the workers carried out the daily and often times gut-wrenching task of rebuilding, people from the surrounding nations watched to see what was going on. As they engaged in the daily grind and difficult challenges of the project, more than likely, they did not realize that God was using their difficulties and challenges as an opportunity to reflect His glory to those watching. It is likely that Nehemiah and the workers never realized the impact their commitment in the face of such adversity would have or that God was using them as points of light. That is, until the project was completed and the surrounding nations and enemies concluded that it was with the help of God that the project was completed.

Nehemiah 6:16 NIV
When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

While the difficulties and challenges of becoming the person God wants you to be and doing that which He has called you to do consume you, know that there are people watching you. God is using your struggles as a point of light to extend His salvation to those watching, especially those who have yet to know Him as Lord and Savior. At some point, your toughest critics and even your enemies will come to the realization that accomplishing the work was made possible only with the help of God.
