The arrival of Jesus was preceded by an historical, 400 year long period known as the years of silence. During this time, the prophets who spoke on behalf of God were silent; they did not prophesy. Although God was silent, He was not inactive. He was preparing the way for the arrival of Jesus and the fulfillment of His purpose. God was working behind the scenes performing important tasks that would enable Jesus to spread the Good News throughout the whole world. It is interesting to note, that Jesus’ ministry took place in approximately a 25-mile circumference. The only reason the Gospel was able to reach beyond the first century is due to the 400 years God spent working behind the scenes. God was busy creating the roadways and universal communication system that allowed the Gospel to spread throughout the world and to grow over time. Had Jesus arrived sooner, His message would have never survived beyond the first century.

God created you with a divine purpose in mind. However, between the discovery of your purpose and the pursuit of it, a process takes place. When it comes to God’s divine purpose for your life, He is constantly working behind the scenes to prepare the way. Remember, your divine purpose is but a piece of the puzzle. You are part of God’s eternal plan, one that began before you arrived on earth and that will continue long after you are gone. God’s purpose for you is much bigger than you are. Ultimately, you are participating in something that began some two thousand years ago when Jesus appeared on earth. Even our small part in God’s massive and eternal plan cannot get accomplished if He is not working behind the scenes.

God is always working behind the scenes so do not confuse His silence with inactivity. What then should we do while we wait? Dream, prepare, and pray. Dream about what could and should be then envision the end results. Prepare by thinking through all that will be required to accomplish this enormous project. Finally, pray; pray for God to work behind the scenes. Pray that God would prepare the way around you and for the right attitude inside you so that you can pull off this huge endeavor when your name is called.

2 Corinthians 4:15-18 NLT

All of this is for your benefit. And as God’s grace reaches more and more people, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory. That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!  So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
