How do you discover your real purpose in life? I am not referring to such things as your job, daily responsibilities, or even your long-term goals. I am speaking about the real reason why you are here at all, that divine purpose for which God created you. Let’s face it; without divine purpose, we can be busy in life doing many things, but God created us to do something specific. The question then becomes: how do you and I discover our divine purpose, that reason for which God created us?

Divine purpose begins to surface in the heart of the man or woman who becomes consumed with the tension between what is, what should, and what could be. Often times, divine purpose starts with the inability to accept things as they are. There always is a moral element to divine purpose. Divine purpose is not only something that could be done; it is something that must be done. This is the element that captures the heart and mind and elevates one from passive concern to action. Your purpose also has a divine element. There will always be a direct connection between what God has placed in your heart and what He is up to in the world at large. The first step in this process is to discover what concerns you and the second step is to move from concern to action.

 Discovering your Concern

Divine purpose starts with a concern; you hear or see something that grabs your attention and it will not let go. The truth for most people however is that this concern never goes any farther than the daily, personal worries in their own lives. The best way for you to discover God’s purpose for your life is to seek and understand what concerns Him. When God’s concerns become your concerns, you will have discovered your divine purpose, that reason for which God created you.

 Psalms 119: 105 NIV

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

 Moving into Action

Divine purpose does not necessarily mean that an immediate action is required other than preparation. God wants His divine purpose for your life to mature and to be made abundantly clear. The Apostle Paul went to the desert of Arabia when God called him to preach the gospel before moving into action.

But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. When this happened, I did not rush out to consult with any human being. Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was. Instead, I went away into Arabia, and later I returned to the city of Damascus. – Galatians 1:15-17 NLT

Living out your divine purpose will eventually require you to champion a cause. In due time, it will require you to have the courage to move into action and put your neck on the line for the cause that concerns you. What is of concern to God? What concerns you? What is the solution? What should you do?
