Healing for the Soul
Tuesday January 10, 2017
When I was growing up, I remember people saying that those who spoke to themselves must be suffering from some sort of mental illness. If in fact, this is true, then I should be institutionalized because I constantly find myself talking to myself. “I cannot believe you did that. Why did you say that? You should know better. Are you going to listen to yourself or are you going to listen to God? Make sure you remember to… It is about time! Good job!” These are a sample of the conversations I have with myself. If you are like me, do not worry; we are in good company because King David, author of the majority of the psalms also spoke to himself.
Psalms 103: 1-3 NIV
Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases…
Although our sins warrant capital punishment, God saves us by offering us forgiveness. Our diseases lead to mortality, but God keeps us alive by healing our souls. Corporal healing is just one of the benefits of believing and trusting in God. I have seen God miraculously heal people from all kinds of illnesses my mother being one of them. However, as I read the Gospels, I see how multitudes of people were healed by Jesus, yet all of them eventually passed away.
While it remains true that God may or may not choose to heal our bodies, the physical healing is temporary, a mere patch that will eventually fade away. However, you and I like King David, must constantly remind ourselves to praise God because death and disease have been conquered. Through miracle working power of God, our souls are being renewed and healed from disease on a daily basis. Regardless of the highs and lows we might be experiencing, just like King David, we need to remind ourselves to praise God for saving and for healing our souls. Often times, this not what we most want, however, praise be to the Lord who has given us what we need the most, healing for our souls.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
