Whether you realize it or not, our lives are governed by laws. These laws apply to everyone, irrespective of who you are, what you believe, or what you have. There is a law, the law of sowing and reaping, whatever a person plants, that will they reap. There is a law pertaining to gravity, the law of gravity will bring anyone down who decides to jump out of a plane, it is inescapable. These are universal laws and they apply to everyone. The same is true concerning faith. On the one hand, your faith in God is irrelevant if you are not willing to apply it. On the other hand, regardless as to whether or not you are a believer, if you apply even the smallest amount of faith, God will honor it.

James 2: 25 NIV

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?

The Hebrew people were encamped at Shittim, in the Jordan Valley opposite Jericho, ready to cross the river. Joshua sent out a couple of spies to investigate the military strength in Jericho. Upon entering the city, the spies hid in the house of a non-Hebrew woman who was also a prostitute named Rahab. Her house was built into the city walls. The King of Jericho was told that Rahab was hiding the spies and so he sent a message to her telling her to give them up. Rahab however, told the King that the men had already departed her home when in fact they remained hidden in her house. Later that evening, she helped the spies escape and said to them: I know that the Lord has given you this land. We have heard how the Lord dried up the waters of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt. When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and one the earth below.

Sometime later, Joshua and the Hebrew people invaded Jericho and spared the life of Rahab. Allow me to ask you this question: why do you think Rahab’s life was spared? Was it because of what she believed or was it because of what she did with what she believed? Obviously, it was because she applied what she believed. Faith in God is a universal principle it works for everyone. If applied faith was able to save Rahab, how much more will the faith in God of us born again Christian serve to save and preserve our lives each day?
