Happy are the Meek

Imagine putting on a surprise party for a loved one; you secure a great venue with food, music and the works. The only problem is that the birthday person was not invited to the party. Imagine celebrating your parent’s fiftieth anniversary but not inviting them to the celebration. A celebration without the guest of honor would not make any sense. Yet, this same dynamic occurs in our lives when it comes to our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

 

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

– Jesus (Revelations 3:20 NIV)

 

Jesus, in his sermon on the mountain said: “Happy are the meek”. In the Bible, the term “meekness” referred to men and women who relied on God rather than on their own strength; they were people who realized that they were in need of a higher power. If you are ever going to become truly happy you are going to need a higher power to overcome in some areas of your life. The only problem with this is that you are going to have to open the door and allow Jesus into every area of your life.

 

Opening the Door to Jesus

 

  1. I accept God’s son as my Savior. Many of us would say that Jesus is our savior. However, the salvation offered by Jesus is not limited to heaven and hell, or life and death. Jesus wants to be the savior in every area of your life, especially those areas that prevent you from being truly and consistently happy. Meekness requires that you open the door to Jesus in every area of your life.

 

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved. – Acts 16:31 NIV

 

  1. I accept God’s word as my standard. We all live by some sort of standard or code. Realize it or not you have an ethical, moral, financial, and relational code; you have a standard for every area of your life. Meekness requires that you look to God’s word as the standard for your life.

 

The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. – 2 Timothy 3:16 TLB

 

 

  1. I accept God’s will as my strategy. Not only do we have a standard, we also have a strategy and our strategy is based on what we feel is our purpose in life. Some have purposed to become rich while others take it easy. Meekness requires that we discover God’s will and purpose for our lives.

 

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. – Ephesians 2:10 NLT

 

  1. I accept God’s power as my strength. There are things that we are powerless to do. There are areas in our lives that no matter how much we have tried, we are powerless to change them. Meekness requires us to rely on God’s power and not our own.

 

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
