I Am
Our God who created the heavens did so in order to visibly show us His glory. Psalm 19 says: The heavens declare the glory of God. Our God who created the heavens and the earth is also interested in showing His glory through His majesty, His strength, His wisdom, His honor and His reputation. The dilemma is that there is often a conflict between the interests of God and our interest. The conflict is that I am also looking for someone to see my glory, my majesty, my strength, my wisdom, my honor and my reputation.
We live in a world where everyone wants to get his and her own. From the youngest to the oldest, all are interested in their own glory. The problem is that in seeking to lift up my own name, my reputation, my glory we have displaced God. The interesting thing is that God is always looking for people who see themselves as small and insignificant so that through them He could show forth His glory.
All The heroes in the Bible were people who saw themselves as insignificant yet ended up playing important roles in God’s History. These people would often respond to God’s calling by saying: Who me? One of those heroes who responded that way was Moses. Pharaoh, the most powerful man on the face of the earth had enslaved God’s people in Egypt. And God decided that he wanted to show His glory both to His people and to Pharaoh and the Egyptian people. But God was looking for someone to take part of His plan and chose a man named Moses.
Bible Reading
Read Exodus 3: 1-15
God appears to Moses and calls him saying: Moses, Moses I am the God of your father. I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I have seen the affliction of my people I have heard their complaints; I have decided to deliver them. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people out of Egypt.
Key verses Exodus 3: 11-14
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
Suddenly Moses realized what many of us need to realize. Suddenly Moses understood what God was saying. Suddenly Moses understood what God’s name was:
I Am
I am the center of everything.
I am the one who will deliver.
I am their savior.
I am more than enough.
I am all-powerful.
I am God.
Moses asks God: Who am I? Moses suddenly realized what his name was:
I am not the center of everything.
I’m not the one who will deliver.
I’m not the savior.
I am not enough.
I am not almighty.
I am not God.
Moses suddenly realized something that each of us should realize, that God is looking for insignificant people through which to display his glory.
Heavenly Father, I am well aware that I fall short of your glory. But if you can use even a person like myself, here I am. Let my life be a giant billboard broadcasting your glory wherever I go.
