As Einstein said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting to get a different result. If you are going to choose to be happy you will have to make some changes in your life. As you look towards the future, you will have to change the way you deal with your past hurts, your present hang-ups and habits, and the worries you feel. You will never change however, or become truly happy until you accept some facts of life.

 

  1. Knowing what is right is not enough.
  2. Good intentions are not enough.
  3. Willpower is not enough.

I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.

 

There are areas of your life that no matter how hard you try to, you will never be able to change them. This is precisely the dilemma the Apostle Paul was facing when he wrote, “Obviously I need help. I don’t have what it takes.” Like the Apostle Paul you don’t need another chance or more willpower, you need help. You need another source of power; you need God.

 

Choosing to be happy begins when you say to yourself I obviously need help. And when you pray, God give me the courage and willingness to admit that I am powerless to control my self, my past hurts and mistakes, my present bad habits, addictions, and hang-ups, or my future hopes and dreams. When you do this, you will experience God’s grace. Grace is the power of God to forgive and heal you of your hurts, hang-ups and bad habits. It is also the supernatural power to cope with your hurts, hang-ups, and habits.
