Measuring Spiritual Growth

Philippians 1:6 (NLV)
I am sure that God Who began the good work in you will keep on working in you until the day Jesus Christ comes again.

There are certain things that are easily measured, your height, your weight, your waist size. But how do you measure spiritual growth? God works in each of us in different ways and at different times, so comparison for the sake of measuring might not be the best way. But if you develop the spiritual growth-habits of prayer, studying God’s word, fellowship and generosity, you should be able to notice several indicators of spiritual growth in your life.

  • Less worries and more rejoicing. Even though spiritual battles become more intense, your worries decrease and your rejoicing increases.
  • Genuine repentance. Actions and reactions that in the past went unnoticed now make you feel a sense of conviction. You feel the urgency to go to your Heavenly Father and confess and turn away from your sins.
  • Eagerness to share. As you come closer to God through the spiritual growth-habits, you discover more and more of your Heavenly Father’s unconditional love, and you can’t keep this loving feeling to yourself. And out of the abundance of God’s love in your heart your mouth speaks.

Measuring spiritual growth might not be easy, but there are indicators of our growth or lack thereof. Remember, these indicators are the result of God’s work in us as we practice our spiritual growth habits.

Heavenly Father, help me grow to be more like you. Complete the good work that You have begun in me, as I pray, study, fellowship and give generously.
