Worship Service, Worship Leader, Worship Team, Worship Music. We often use these titles when we speak about worshipping God. One of my favorite parts of the church service is the worship portion. It is a wonderful experience to join the worship leader in a song of worship to God. However, worship is much more than singing at church; worshipping God has to do with the way in which we conduct our lives.

 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.  God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.  – John 4:23-24 NIV

 Worship, before the coming of Jesus, was bout being in a specific place at a specific time. Once a year, the people would journey to the temple. There the High Priest, the only one allowed in the inner most part of the temple, would worship God on behalf of the people. The closer you were able to get to the innermost part of the temple, the closer you would be to the presence of God. Worship back then was all about being in the right place at the right time. Now comes Jesus declaring that all of that was going to change and that change was starting now. Worship would no longer be about being in the right place at the right time; from now on worship would take place at all times in all places.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. – Romans 12: 1 NIV

Worship is no longer something the priest does on our behalf. Non-stop worship is about each one of us offering our lives to God. Non-stop worship is about living our lives at all times and in all places in a way, that honors God. This means, in our homes, work, school, gym, market… In essence, it is non-stop honoring of God at all times everywhere.

I love the worship service, worship team, worship leader, and the worship music. However, let me be honest, none of these entails being a living sacrifice. These are external expressions of what we experience during worship. True worship of God is living a life sacrificed to God; it is living a life that honors God at all times and in all places. This is our true and proper act of non-stop worship.

 

Heavenly Father its because of what Jesus did that I can worship you in all places and all the time. I don’t have to rely on someone else to worship you on my behalf. And I don’t have to wait for the worship service, thank you for the privilege of worshiping in all places and at all times.
