Selfishness: The way we think

“Have it your way. You deserve it. Because I’m worth it. Why wait? Got the urge? Obey your thirst. No boundaries.” These are just a few of the slogans advertisers use to get us to buy their products. Advertisers know what we fail to accept, that selfishness is in every one of us. Selfishness is ingrained in our way of thinking; I want it my way, I deserve it, I’m worth it, I want it now, because I feel like it, I’ll do and go wherever I want to… While I have nothing against these slogans, I do have a problem with selfishness. Humility should be our priority and not selfishness.

Philippians 2:3-4 NIV

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Humility

This might be contrary to our way of thinking, but imagine for a second a society, place, or family where humility is valued and has priority. Imagine a group of people who have decided to value others as greater than themselves even though that may not be the case. Now imagine if this same group of people decided to place the interests of others above their own; this is exactly the way Christians should act and this is our calling.

Philippians 2:5-8 NLT

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Think Humility

What we do and the result of our actions, is determined by they way we think. If we are selfish in our thinking it will lead to self-deceit and self-deceit will lead to destruction. On the other hand, if we think humility, then our actions will be humble in nature and that will lead us to God’s blessings.

Psalms 138:6 NLT

Though the Lord is great, he cares for the humble, but he keeps his distance from the proud.

Heavenly Father don’t allow me to be influenced by this culture into becoming a selfish person only seeking what’s good for me. Rather thru my relationship with you may I become more and more like Jesus, who being God voluntarily humbled himself and gave up his life for me.
